We have added the independent category.
We had quite a few requests for third parties. We decided on independent as opposed to adding new parties for Green, Libertarian, Reform, etc. etc. We didn't want to clutter the site too much, and we wanted everyone to have an equal chance at front page exposure.
If you're going to be a viable candidate (or virtual candidate) you'll have to campaign harder as an independent. Anyone who registers as a Democrat or Republican will already have an interest in promoting candidates within his own party. Just like in the real world eh?

I would like to run for President, as the first openly gay man. That would be hard to do, we cannot even get married. But as president, I would push for eliminating the DOMA laws (Denile of Marriage). And get lgbt persons included in the hate crimes bill.

I dont think the general public is ready to have a gay president, I think that people would be affraid that gay issues would take center stage over any other issues. I personally dont care is the president is gay, black, female as long as I feel that the person has the best intrest of the country in mind and not just a personal goal. I feel that it is a cheap blow to call someones family member that is gay a dragging that person through the dirt when they had nothing to do with the elections at all anyway.I think that you need to find an issue that is a little more widespread across more groups of people rather that just trying to get elected on your stand on gay issues.If you are serious about running you need to advertise yourself a little better than you have, I am always looking for someone other than the usual dem/rep to vote for but I need to hear more than I want to be the first gay president I dont care if your gay or not that is not the first thing that I think of when I see someone unless they advertise themselves that way. I think that kind of things need to stay behind closed doors weather you are gay or not, I dont need to know who you sleep with on your own time all I'm intrested in is what you do when your in the white house inthe name of America.
